Fly Fishing

Have you ever been fly fishing? This was my first time to experience the vast world that is fly fishing. Ernest Hemingway fly fished, so I guess you could say it is one of the manliest hobbies in existence. That is what my husband thinks at least. :) From my perspective (as in sitting on the bank with a camera and a good book) I will say that It is extremely calming and beautiful to watch.

We started off the trip at a popular fishing spot in Virginia. Popular in this case meant there were over one hundred fisherman and dozens of people with baskets and bait who were catching loads of trout. The guys didn't catch anything, but they learned a lot so it wasn't wasted. From what I've gathered fly fishing is more about the learning experience than actually catching 15 fish to take home for frying. When the sun started to set we packed up and headed back to town for a delicious dinner in Knoxville. The following morning we woke up early and drove into the Chimney Tops for a spot to fish wild trout. This time the guys were more stealthy. Daniel had some bites, but every time a trout would bite, the knot came undone and he lost his fly to those talented wild fish. Lesson learned: know how to tie a good knot. Once again, no fish but a learning experience none the less. Daniel's favorite quote of the moment is this:

"The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad." —A.K. Best

If you ever decide you want to try it, I am sure these two guys would love to meet you at the river.
